5 Best Flowers to Plant in North DFW

As spring overtakes us here in Dallas, you may be chomping at the bit to get out into your garden and start planting flowers. This is a good way to celebrate the spring season as you come up with a residential landscaping plan to ensure your property looks its best. What better way to add a pop of refreshing color to your landscape than with fresh flowers?

Here are the top five spring flowers to plant in the north DFW area.

1.  Alyssum

This is a low-growing annual with small, delicate flowers that bloom in white or lavender. Alyssum doesn’t require a lot of care, plus it is drought tolerant and does well in all soil types. This bushy plant makes a nice complement to rock gardens or as fill for stone walls. Plant Alyssum in full sun. Expect it to grow between four inches and 12 inches tall.

2.  Begonia

This lovely spring annual is great for garden beds or pots. It’s a flexible flower with varieties that do well for both heavy areas of shade and sunlight. You will find begonia in traditional or trailing varieties, with white, pink or red blooms. Those blooms are offset by a nice deep green foliage. Begonias do best in loose soil, making it a great choice for potting. Expect it to grow between six and 15 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide.

3.  Impatiens

This annual craves shade and rewards you with many bloom colors. This flower is a low-growing one that will spread out wide. Impatiens are delicate, featuring tender stems, flowers and foliage, making them well suited to pots or garden beds that don’t see a lot of foot traffic. They bloom nicely in spring but die with extreme summer heat. Wait to plant these till the last freeze of the season. They like well-prepared soil with good drainage, growing between 10 to 24 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide.

4.  Petunia

This annual flower loves the sun, showing off blooms in many colors throughout spring and beginning of summer. Petunias come in both traditional and trailing varieties and are well suited either to a garden bed or pot. You’ll get even showier blooms if you stay on top of your fertilizing routine. This flower will grow between 12 and 24 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide.

5.  Portulaca

Part of the succulent family, Portulaca is a low growing and wide spreading annual that has a unique foliage and plant structure. Give this flower plenty of sun. Did you know that portulaca produces new flowers every day? They open up in the morning, then close up in the heat of the day. You don’t have to give them too much water and they thrive in well-draining soil. Use portulaca as ground cover within rocks or in garden beds.
