5 Signs You Need a New Irrigation System

Everyone wants a healthy, vibrant lawn surrounding their home. This not only increases your curb appeal and property value, but it provides a safe, soft and fun space for your kids and pets to play. A strong lawn makes your house looks good, and who doesn’t want that? But if you’ve been noticing your lawn looking brown or patchy, all that hand watering with the hose is just not cutting it – or your existing sprinkler system is failing in some way.

The main component to achieving a healthy lawn is a quality irrigation system. Hiring a professional skilled in irrigation should be your first step.

Not sure if you need a new irrigation system? Here are five signs that it’s time to install or replace your sprinkler system.

  1. Lots of leaks. It’s possible to repair small leaks in your sprinkler heads but if they continue to sprout leaks and you’re spending a fortune on temporary fixes, it’s time to put your money where it will bring you the most reward – into a system upgrade.
  2. Low water pressure. If your sprinkler heads can’t project water as far they used to, or you’re noticing inefficient operation all of a sudden, there could be chips or cracks in the sprinkler head. Consider system replacement after a consultation with a professional.
  3. Increasing water bills. If your water bills have been spiking lately and you can see no other reason why they would, your irrigation system could be to blame. That’s because sprinkler systems get less efficient as they get on in years, and they start to need more and more water to adequately irrigate your lawn. A professional may be able to isolate the problem to one section of the system, but it could also signal the need for an entire replacement.
  4. Poor design. Your sprinkler system may have been poorly designed for your lawn in the first place. Perhaps the heads overshoot your grass or you’re noticing big dry patches where the heads aren’t reaching. It may be time to come up with a new design plan that will give you the coverage you need while minimizing water waste.
  5. Old age. Your sprinkler system could simply be getting too old to handle the demands you’re placing on it. That’s OK – every system has a finite life span, even if you’ve maintained it well over the years. If it’s time to upgrade your system, you will notice more efficiency, lower water bills and more coverage, resulting in a green, lush lawn.  Newer models feature technological advancements that are far more cost-effective and energy-efficient than their older counterparts.
