Tips for Pool Maintenance All Year Round

Tips for Pool Maintenance All Year Round

Pools aren’t just great in summer. They can be used most of the year with proper maintenance, and a pool heater of course. This takes dedication on your part, as it’s critical to keep your pool safe and clean at all times. Even if you cover your pool during winter, there are still some things you need to do to ensure it’s in good shape for when you open it again.

Here are some maintenance tips on how you can keep your backyard oasis sparkling, clean, and inviting all year long.

Chlorination

Many people these days opt for saltwater swimming pools, but there are still plenty of chlorine pools out there. If you have a chlorine pool, check the dispenser every week to make sure it’s working properly and has the proper amount of chlorine in it. Monitor the chlorine levels in your pool, too, so you can address any issues early on before they get out of control.

Cleaning

Clean out the skimmer basket on a weekly basis – daily at the peak of the season. Check for debris inside the pump once a month, but shut off the pump before you do anything. Clean your filters once every couple of months, or more frequently during peak usage. This will also depend on the overall clarity of the water.

Circulation

To ensure proper chemical balance and distribution, circulate the pool regularly. This means you should run the pump for at least eight to 10 hours a day to move the water around and maintain the right balance of chemicals at all times.

Cover

In the off season, cover your pool securely to keep debris and dirt out of the pool. This will make it much easier to open it come the next season. You don’t want any surprises when you uncover it! Using a cover also minimizes water loss due to evaporation.

Water Level

Weekly, check the water level and add as needed. Regularly brush and clean along the water line to avoid the buildup of scum, algae and dirt.

More Pool Maintenance Tips

  • Don’t swim when tests reveal your water quality isn’t in the normal range, or if it just looks cloudy, green or unhygienic.
  • Service your pool equipment regularly, such as your vacuum, salt chlorinator, filter and pump.
  • Clean your pool and accessories frequently. Remove debris from the pool, vacuum it regularly and store pool toys and accessories safely.

Pool maintenance is a commitment you must make at the very start of pool ownership. Once you embrace the tasks that need to be done to ensure a safe swimming pool, you can take the time to enjoy your backyard oasis. It’s wise to get on a consistent pool maintenance schedule so you don’t miss a beat.
